Are you on the market for a new breastpump and considering the Motif Duo Breast Pump? Then you’ve come to the right place! Aeroflow, a medical supplies provider, has sponsored this post and asked me to do a Motif Duo Double Electric Breast Pump product review!
It’s a newer pump and less known so hopefully this review will help answer your questions about the pump! Here’s my honest review of the pump as a mom of 3 who has owned 3 other pumps!
About the Motif Duo
The Motif Duo is a portable personal-grade electric breastpump that can be used as a single or double pump. It comes with a rechargeable battery and has all the features you would expect of a high-end breastpump.
It retails for $199 through Aeroflow and is covered by many insurance plans. I’ll walk you through some of the specific features in the rest of this post…
Review Criteria
So on to the review and details… When reviewing a product, I typically evaluate it based on a few factors:
- Effectiveness
- Convenience
- Value
- Ease of Use
- Uniqueness
- Pros and Cons
Let’s get started…
Effectiveness of the Motif Duo
The Motif Duo has two pumping functions – Massage and Expression. Massage simulates how the baby sucks for the first few minutes to stimulate let down and Expression simulates the rest of the typical nursing session.
You can also adjust the suction strength when pumping in Massage and Expression mode and pick anything between 1 and 10. You can also adjust the strength at any time or switch between Massage and Expression at anytime. Having these two functions is a great asset and fairly standard in high-end electric pumps.
The question is always whether these settings are effective or not.
After testing the Motif Duo multiple times, I can tell you that it is just as effective as my Medela Pump In Style and my Medela Freestyle with one exception … It is actually more comfortable to use!
I’m able to crank it up to 10 without any pain while still getting comparable output to my other pumps. The vacuum strength is also very comparable to other personal use pumps. (If you are new to pumping, please note that every mom is different.
We each respond best to different pumps and some moms even respond best to manual pumps vs electric ones. Unfortunately, there’s just no way to know until you try a pump though. The above is my personal experience.)
When comparing this breast pump to its competitors, I’d say the Motif Duo comparable for effectiveness (but give it a bonus point for comfort!).
Convenience
Convenience is one of the areas where I think this pump truly shines! The Motif Duo has a rechargeable battery that lasts for 2.5 hours and recharges in just 1.5 hours!
This is a huge benefit for those of you who will be pumping at work or on the go! Most pumps need to be plugged in which just isn’t realistic or convenient and while you can buy battery adapters for many pumps that an extra piece that you need to carry around AND costs extra money.
This pump already has it built in and will last for 5+ pumping sessions depending on how long you pump for. The pump is also very small – 2.8″ (W) x 1.8″ (D) x 4.3″ (H) – and weighs just 0.6 pounds!
So it’s much more compact than most of it’s competitors and weighs less too! For it’s size, weight, and built-in rechargeable battery, I’d say that this pump is more convienent than most of it’s competitors!
Value of breast pump
Since this pump shares many of the same features as other pumps on the market, I think it’s fair to evaluate value based on comparing price. I’m most familiar with these three pumps so I’ll focus on them.
MEDELA FREESTYLE
Most Similar
- Small in size
- Lightweght
- Internal Rechargeable Battery
- Massage and Expression Mode
- Memory function
- Rarely covered by insurance
MOTIF DUO
Great Value!
- Small in size
- Lightweight
- Internal Rechargeable Battery
- Massage and Expression Mode
- Memory function
- Covered by many Insurance Plans
MEDELA PUMP IN STYLE
Commonly Used
- Bulky
- Needs to be plugged in
- Battery not included
- Massage and Expression Mode
- Covered by most insurance plans
- Replacement parts easy to find
Given the features and price, I consider the Motif Duo to be the best value! While the Medela Pump In Style is close in price, it needs to be plugged in. You can purchase an external battery buy it would cost you about $30 which only widens the price gap (and an external battery isnt as convenient!).
Ease of Use
I’ll admit that I procrastinated when it came to testing out the Motif Duo. I had a newborn at home and was running on virtually no sleep. The last thing I wanted to do was read a manual and tinker with new pump parts.
To my surprise though, the manual was extremely short and to the point, and assembly was nearly fool proof! A few things really jumped out at me:
- The “membrane” or “diaphram” is much larger so you will be much less likely to lose it down the drain or tear it! (Yes this can happen with other pumps!)
- Assembly and use of the device is incredibly intuitive! You really don’t even need the instructions to show you how to put it together! (I especially like this because as busy moms we are often distracted or exhausted – it’s so nice to be able to do things in auto-pilot!)
- The valve prevents milk from spilling out if the bottle is tipped over! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pumped only to accidentally knock over the bottle while trying to put everything away. With my last son (and previous pump), this meant I’d lose one or two bottles of freshly pumped milk and it’s soooo painful! With this pump you would only lose a few drops!
- The memory function is amazing!! You can record how you like to pump and then ignore the pump until you’re done! You don’t have to use the memory function every time you pump, but it’s really nice to have the option for when you want to nap or do something else while pumping! (So for you ladies that like to have multiple letdowns while you pump – this is especially key for you!)
Uniqueness
What seperates this pump most from other pumps (in my opinion) is that it is SO small and lightweight, yet still just as powerful as it’s competitors AND comes with a built-in rechargeable battery!
AND you get that all for a low price and it’s covered by insurance. I would consider the Medela Freestyle to be the most similar but it’s not covered by most insurance carriers and it’s extremely expensive!
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Small and lightweight
- Long lasting rechargeable battery
- Good suction strength (up to 250mmHg vacuum strength)
- Easy to use
- Has a massage and expression mode
- Has a memory function
- Quiet (but not 100% silent)
- Comes with 3 different size flanges so that you can try them on without having to buy each size to test!
- Inexpensive for an electric pump
- Covered by many insurance plans
- Compatible with Spectra accessories such as breast shields, valves, and bottles
- You can direct pump into storage bags using the Tommee Tippee pouch bottles with the number two size adapter
Cons
- Pump doesn’t switch from massage to expression mode on its own.
- Replacement parts not commonly sold in stores (but, hey, there’s always Amazon 2-day shipping!)
Mom’s Perspective of the Motif Duo
It boils down to a few things for me – It’s mobile friendly thanks to its size and battery, it’s effective and has all the features we need, and it’s covered by insurance and affordable!
