Either way, this is a super fun fish craft for preschoolers!
In this post, I’m going to show you how to create a cute paper fish using a paper plate. This activity is great for preschool-aged children and perfect for helping them work on their fine motor skills, too.
They’ll love the confidence they’ll get in making their own paper plate fish so make certain that you find a space in the house to showcase it!

Material List for this fish craft for preschool Project:
The fun part about prepping for this list is that you just need a few simple supplies to get started!
- paper plates
- blue paint
- orange paint
- black sharpie
- clear glue
It’s such a short and sweet list, right? This is one of the things that makes this one of my favorite fish crafts for kids! Here are a few notes about the materials listed above…
Paper Plates
It’s best to use the super cheap paper plates without a coating if you can. This is what will be easiest to paint and cut.
Paint
While I used blue and orange paint for this, you can also use any color of paints that the kids want. Let them have fun and be creative. I especially love using the orange so that the kids can make this a goldfish craft!
Clear glue
If you don’t have clear glue, don’t stress. Any glue will work but I just love clear glue because it dries clear.
How To Make A Fish Paper Plate Craft
Step 1: Cut out the body of the fish
Cut out a strip of paper plate as shown below. It should be about 2 inches thick or so. Depending on your kid’s age, they may be able to do this step themselves if they have saftey scissors!
Step 2: Paint the strip of paper plate
Use the blue paint, or whatever color paint your child wants and paint the strip of the paper plate. Make certain to let it dry.
Step 3: Cut out the fins
Cut out four pieces from the paper plate and paint them orange, or whatever color your child wants. This will be the fish fins. Let them dry once painted.
Step 4: Glue together the body and the fish
Glue the ends of the long piece of the painted paper plate together and hold to dry. Then glue the fish fins on the inside as well. (this picture shows that we painted the long piece orange and then the fins blue so have fun changing up the colors)
Step 5: Glue on the eyes
Cut out little circles and glue them on the fish face. (Or you could use googly eyes if you prefer!)
Step 6: Add details using the sharpie
Add the dots in the middle of the eyes and the lines on the rest of the body of the fish.
Frequently asked questions about this fish craft with paper plates
This depends on a few factors like thickness of the paint and humidity, but I would say waiting about 15 minutes and then checking is a good start.
You can always turn crafts into learning opportunities! While you’re making this craft, talk about the different types of fish or even plan a fishing trip for the day.
If you have a local aquarium in town, you can follow up with a field trip, too.
