DIY Mother's Day Pop Up Card (Free for Cricut & Glowforge)

This DIY card is so easy to make, you won’t even need a full step-by-step tutorial! Just my FREE TEMPLATE and a few tips. and you’re DIY Mothers Day pop up card will be nearly done!

A few years ago (wow, time flies!) I shared a DIY Happy Mother’s Day card with pop up flowers in the middle (find it here!) but this year I wanted to share something a little different. Rather than having a big lower in the middle pop open when the card is opened, this one has the word MOM pop out with some flowers in the background. I like this one a lot more!

This DIY Happy Mother’s Day pop up card is FOOL PROOF so that anyone can really put it together if you just have a few simple tips! But if you’ve made Pop Up cards before, then you may not even need these tips! Best of all, there’s a lot of room for creativity with this card so you can make multiple copies and each will look totally unique and custom!

Plus there’s plenty of space for you to add a sweet message or have family members add their own special messages to it too! It takes so little time to put together, why not spend a few extra minutes making it really special with something custom!

Let your kids join in too and help you make it! They can choose where to place the flowers, the colors to use and even draw it it! Let them help make this a truly creative card that’s one of a kind!

This card can be made with a Cricut machine like the Cricut Maker (or any other cutting machine) and a Glowforge like the Glowforge Spark, Glowforge Aura, or even the Pro and Plus! So fast and easy!

To make this pop up card you really just need a machine to cut all the intricate cuts for you, cardstock, and some glue! My FREE design even includes an envelope for you!

MATERIALS FOR this Pop Up card

Cutting Machine (Like the Glowforge Aura/Spark/Plus/Pro or Cricut + Cricut accessories)
Cardstock (any color will do! I get mine from here) – I used white cardstock for the inside so I could write on it later.
Glue (I love this tacky glue for big areas and this for small – I buy it in bulk!)

Cutting Machine

I LOVED my Cricut machine for many many years but hated the sticky mats and occasionally tearing paper that would happen as the sticky mats started to loose their stick! If you have a Cricut machine and still love yours or aren’t able to upgrade, that’s totally fine! You can 100% use it to make this design and it will come out great!

If using a Cricut, you’ll need a standard grip mat or a light grip mat, a standards cutting blade, and a scoring tool! You can also use a Cricut compatible Pen to draw on the front of the card or use a scoring tool to make fold lines.

If you have a laser cutter like one of the Glowforge machines, this process will be much easier! You just need your machine which can cut and score with ease! No sticky mat, everything will cut and drop through with basically no clean up (other than tossing the scraps!).

Cardstock

You’ll need a few sheets of cardstock for this project! How many will depend on how many different colors you want to use and how big you want to make the card.

I like 65lb solid core cardstock but really, any cardstock will work!

I usually get mine from here. There’s always a great deal to be had!

You can really make this a unique card by picking from mom’s favorite colors! I used white card stock for the inside, red for the outside, and a whatercolor printed cardstock for the flower shapes and envelope because they were a but more multi-colored. I like how that works out!

Glue

Of course you’ll need some glue! With cards like this it’s important to pick the right glue. If you’re looking for something super easy and don’t need it to last forever, you can use glue sticks. I do this often when I’m in a rush and know the card won’t be held on to forever.

If you want something that Mom can save forever and cherish though, you’ll need something better!

I love this one for big areas. I personally pour a bit out onto a plate or scrap of paper and use a foam brush to spread it VERY thin but you don’t have to. You can use the applicator nozzle if you want! Just go very light because you don’t want the paper to get saturated and warp. Then I use this for small areas because it’s super strong and dries immediately so I don’t need to worry about the little parts sliding around. You can also be very very specific about where and how much you put. I buy these in bulk because I like them so much!

Note: If you prefer, you can also use double-sided tape to attach the pieces together! Some people find this easier when making cards and sometimes this is easierf for little hands if you have your kids helping!

Bonus material: Vaneer!

One of the things I love about using my Glowforge is that I can cut a much wider range of materials than I used to be able to cut with my Cricut machine! One example is Vaneer! In this project, I decided to make a piece of it out of wood vaneer which already has a sticky backing. It was super thin but gorgeous and easy to apply to the card. It really elevated the card to another level!

How To Make this DIy mother’s day pop up card with a cricut

Step 1: Download the Free Template

Downloasd my exclusive Mother’s Day pop-up card template! Simply fill out the form on this post and you’ll unlock access to a downloadable library. Inside, you’ll find a free SVG file for the card. Once downloaded, unzip the file to get started.

Step 2: Upload the Design to Design Space

Let’s import your downloaded template into Cricut Design Space. Here’s how:

Open Design Space.
Click on “New Project.”
Look for the “Upload Image” button and then “Browse.”
Navigate to your unzipped file, select it, and click “Upload.”
Select the file from your library and choose to add it to canvas.

Voila! Your pop-up card design should now be visible on your canvas.

Step 3: Sizing Up Your Card and Setting Operations

Now comes the fun part: choosing the size of your card! We recommend a height of 7 inches, which will result in a roughly 5×7 inch card when folded.

Here’s a tip: The design will be automatically grouped when uploaded. This means any adjustments you make will affect the entire card proportionally. Don’t worry about ungrouping it yet!

To resize, simply click on one of the corners of the selection and drag it. If for some reason it’s not all grouped, just select all and then resize when it’s all selected so that everything including the envelop resizing proportionally.

Now check on the side of your screen and adjust the operation for each element if needed. Any vertical or horizontal line should be scored. And the text on the front of the card can either be scored or drawn. The rest should be cut. Here are the elements that shouldn’t be cut so you know what they will look like:

Step 4: Choose Your Cardstock Colors

Take a look of the cardstock you have on hand or head to the store/online an dpick some out. Then decide on the color scheme you want to create. Pick out your cardstock in those colors and have them ready.

Once you’re happy with your color choices, click “Make It” in Design Space and follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure you’re using a fine-tip blade in your Cricut machine and have your cardstock loaded on your Cricut Mat. Then swap out/add you scoring tool and/or pen as needed! The instructions on the screen will guide you!

Bonus Tip: This design includes scoring lines to guide your folding. If you don’t have a scoring stylus, no problem! You can simply fold the pieces by hand, taking extra care for clean creases.

Step 5: Putting the Pieces Together

This is where the magic happens! Time to assemble your card and witness it blossom into life.

Glue the cut out letters to the MOM cut out on the interior of the card. This adds stability.
Fold along the score lines along the MOM letters inside the card. you want the bottom of the letters to fold towards you. The top to fold away from you, and then the folds along the lines above the letters towards you again. Then the line going all the way along the card should fold inwards.
Fold the rectangular piece and glue it to the inside of the outer piece. This hides the color of the outer piece from behindthe pop up.
Glue the inner piece to the inside of the outer piece.
Assemble your flowers (each has 3 layers) and glue them and your leaves wherever you want on your card.

There you have it! A beautiful, pop-up mother’s dsay card that’s sure to make Mom’s day extra special. Let your creativity flow and add a heartfelt message to the inside of the card or embellishments to the inside or even outside of the card to make it truly one-of-a-kind. Happy crafting!

How To Make this DIy mother’s day pop up card with a Glowforge

This will work whether you have a Glowforge Aura, Spark, Pro or Plus!

Step 1: Snag Your Free Mother’s Day Pop Up card SVG!

There are two ways to get this file:

Fill out the form on this post and receive an email with the download link.
If you already have access to our resource library, head there and download file C41.

Remember to extract the downloaded file! This unzips the contents, revealing SVG file and a usage/rights document.

Step 2: Choose your Cardstock!

Decide which colors you want to use for your card! You can use lots of different colors for a colorful effect or all white for an elegant look… it’s totally up to you!
You can also use veneer for some of the elements like the cut out letters to elevate this card and make it really unique!

Step 3: Uploading and Arranging the Design

Go to App.Glowforge.com on your computer click on Create New Design then Create a Blank Design.
Then click on “Unknown Material” and choose “80lb Cardstock” as your material. Do this even if you’re using 65lb cardstock like I did.
Click the plus sign in the app’s top center and select “Upload.”
Locate the extracted SVG file (not the zipped folder).
Give the app a minute to anuploadd process the design. Once it’s showing on the screen, it should all be selected – resize it now however you want but make sure that everything is selected as you resize so that it all resizes proportionally.
You should see 2 elements on the left. You will need to set one to cut and one to score. It should look like this.

Now click on “score” and increase the speed to the maximum speed your Glowforge allows. This will be different on each type of Glowforge but just max it out. Leave all the other default settings as is.
Now place your first piece of cardstock in the machine and drag the elemtns you want to cut in that color to the right spot in the app. Drag everything else off the workspace so that it will be ignored.

Step 4: Print your first few pieces.

Initiate Print: Click “Print” and press the teal button on the machine when it starts flashing..
Remove the pieces when you’re done.

Step 5: Print the rest of your pieces.

Put your next piece of cardstock in the machine and drag the appropriate pieces into place onto the workspace, drag the ones you don’t want to print away. Click print etc.
Repeat this process until everything is printed on the pieces of cardstock you want them printed on!

Note: If using veneer for parts of it, finish cutting all your cardstock pieces first, then do the veneer pieces and make sure that you change the material settings to veneer settings when you do!

Step 6: Assemble!

This is where the magic happens! Time to assemble your card and witness it blossom into life.

Glue the cut out letters to the MOM cut out on the inside of the card. This adds stability.
Flip the inner piece of the card over so that the black lines from scoring are on the back. Then fold along the score lines along the MOM letters inside the card. you want the bottom of the letters to fold towards you. The top to fold away from you, and then the folds along the lines above the letters towards you again. Then the line going all the way along the card should fold inwards.
Fold the rectangular piece and glue it to the inside of the outer piece. This hides the color of the outer piece from behind the pop up.
Glue the inner piece to the inside of the outer piece.
Assemble your flowers (each has 3 layers) and glue them and your leaves wherever you want on your card.

All done! Now you can customize it by writing a special message inside or having your kids draw in the card!
